Prizes and Scholarships Up for Grabs at SUNY Canton Engineers Day

CANTON, NY (02/04/2015)(readMedia)-- A $500 scholarship and other prizes will be up for grabs during SUNY Canton's Engineers Day from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Nevaldine Technology Center.

The event will feature a team marshmallow design competition that will test participants' engineering skills. The first place team will each receive a $500 SUNY Canton scholarship, and the second place team will each receive a waived tuition deposit. The competition and event are free and open to anyone.

There will also be fun, interactive demonstrations that will provide a glimpse into the college's engineering technology programs. Guests will be able to construct and program LEGO Mindstorms, test-drive an electric go-kart, experiment with a motion detection system, communicate using lasers and other activities.

"This event is the perfect opportunity for high schoolers, younger students and the entire community to learn about our technology degrees, take a tour, meet our faculty and have some fun," said Michael J. Newtown, interim dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology. "We encourage everyone to join us and explore the high-tech resources we have on campus."

The event is being held during National Engineers Week, Feb. 22-28, which is dedicated to increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers.

The college is asking those interested in attending the event Feb. 24 to register by visiting http://www.canton.edu/engineers/ or calling (315) 386-7119.
