Psi Phi Delta fraternity closed at SUNY Potsdam
After College Greek Judicial Board decision, Psi Phi fraternity chapter will no longer be recognized
POTSDAM, NY (05/05/2011)(readMedia)-- The State University of New York at Potsdam will no longer recognize the Delta chapter of the Psi Phi fraternity. Based on multiple ongoing violations of the law, College policy, and fraternity standards and expectations, SUNY Potsdam has withdrawn all recognition and affiliation with the group. As such they have become a banned organization.
Effective April 15, 2011, the chapter has lost all rights and privileges afforded to recognized fraternities and all chapter functions must cease, including, but not limited to, social and recruitment activities. Current members of the chapter will be given alumni status in the fraternity. Those who do not adhere to the conditions of the revocation risk College disciplinary action and/or criminal prosecution.
"It is always unfortunate when a group's continued behavior causes this to happen. While a number of our Greek letter organizations are working diligently in a positive direction, some persist in making choices that are not congruent with the values of the College and the Greek community. This is the third Greek letter organization banned in the last few years. The call for change in fraternities and sororities has never been more clear," Dean of Students William Morris said.
Because unrecognized Greek organizations have no obligation to the College or its policies and procedures, the College is communicating Psi Phi Delta's loss of recognition broadly to students, parents, faculty, staff and other constituent groups. Affiliation with banned organizations is a violation of the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct and has in the past resulted in serious judicial sanctions, to include suspension from the College.
