Rancho Cucamonga Locals Present at Southern California Conference for Undergrad Research at Whittier College

WHITTER, CA (11/27/2013)(readMedia)-- Seniors Breann De Santiago and Anthony Akkawi, Rancho Cucamonga natives, participated in the 2013 Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR), Change the World: Participate, Innovate, Illuminate, hosted by Whittier College on Saturday, November 23, along with 1,100 scholars from colleges and universities from throughout the region.
A biology major, De Santiago presented her research, "The Effect of Soy Derived Phytoestrogens on Innate Immunity in the Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans," in a 15-minute seminar presentation chaired by faculty moderators.
Anthony Akkawi, a political science major, also presented his research, "On the Internal Reforms of Cuba and Nicaragua," in a 15-minute seminar presentation.
Nominated to Dean's List in the fall 2011, spring 2012, and fall 2012, De Santiago has also been awarded the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) and Internships Fellowship through which she worked as a summer intern at Johns Hopkins Medicine Summer Internship program.
SCCUR provides a forum for the presentation of the best research, scholarship, and creative activities of undergraduate students in the region, and encourages communication of innovative achievements across disciplines, including the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and applied sciences.
