Redesigned Porsche 911 Captures Best Car to Buy Award
Motor Authority Chooses 2012 911 over BMW and Mercedes-Benz Models
NASHUA, N.H. (12/08/2011)(readMedia)-- Porsche made big changes to the latest generation of its 911, updating about 90 percent of its components, and those changes have been overwhelmingly for the better according to Motor Authority. The automotive publication recently named the 2012 Porsche 911 its 2012 Best Car to Buy, giving the sports car some advance street cred before it arrives at Porsche dealerships in February.
Motor Authority announces its Best Car to Buy award annually, choosing from luxury or high-performance vehicles generally priced above $50,000. Vehicles are compared across classes and rated on their styling, quality and quantity of available features, acceleration and handling. This year the seventh-generation Porsche 911 beat out competitors like the Range Rover Evoque SUV, the Nissan GT-R sports car, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe and the BMW 6 Series Coupe.
"There isn't much out there that can contend with a Porsche, although there was some stiff competition for this honor," said Larry Bedell, general manager of New Hampshire Porsche dealer Porsche of Nashua. "The 911 model has been around for nearly 50 years, but Porsche continues to perfect it, releasing each generation with new technology or updated styling to keep it from going stale."
Though the 2012 Porsche 911 rated highly across the board, Motor Authority was particularly impressed with its improved handling and performance. The tight handling comes compliments of a refreshed chassis design that reduces the likelihood of understeer, while performance is boosted by the choice of a 3.4-liter 350-horsepower or 3.8-liter 400-horsepower engine. The Porsche 911 is also capable of using Launch Control to achieve maximum acceleration from a dead stop, a boon for those planning to take their Porsche to the track.
Luxury fans caught their first stateside glimpse of the next-generation Porsche 911 at the LA Auto Show last month following its global debut in Frankfurt earlier this year. In Los Angeles, Porsche showcased the drastic changes to the 2012 model, from the design down to its individual parts. The only carryovers from the previous generation are basics like the steering wheel, crankshaft and piston.
The longer and wider wheelbase and expanded interior space, a gift for those rare rear passengers, are the most visually apparent new features in the Porsche 911. However, the sports car also contains new parts like an electro-mechanical power-steering unit, a new active-chassis control system and a new torque-vectoring system. An industry-first seven-speed manual transmission that boasts quicker shifting times can also be found inside, along with the new Panamera-inspired interior design.
"The more things change in the Porsche 911, the more they stay the same," added Bedell. "The latest generation is still undeniably a Porsche, but the multitude of new parts allow it to push the envelope of what can be accomplished with handing and performance. That is what Porsche owners expect, and that's what they'll get early next year."
