Register Early for Summer Camp Fun at WKCTC

PADUCAH, KY (05/01/2018) Need something for your kids or grandkids to do this summer? West Kentucky Community and Technical College will offer a variety of summer camps for area youth beginning in June. The camps will fill up quickly so early registration is encouraged.

WeDo Robotics 1.0 - June 4 - 8 or June 18 - 22, 8 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Grades 2 - 3
Cost: $235, each week
The program challenges young students to build and program interactive robotic models while providing age-appropriate visual instruction. LEGO lovers will pair up with a partner to build birds, soccer players, giants, planes and more! This is a great opportunity to give students a leg up on science, technology, engineering, art and math experiences in a highly motivated environment. Show-and-tell on the last day of camp will allow parents to celebrate their child's accomplishments for the week. Includes lunch and two snacks.

WeDo Robotics 2.0 - June 11 - 15, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Grades 3 - 4, Third grade prerequisite: WeDo 1.0
Cost: $235
WeDo Robotics 2.0 is based on the latest science standards and was created to continue to challenge and enhance students' curiosity and science skills beyond the classroom. Students will be introduced to computer-aided design as well as other computer science activities. Show-and-tell on the last day of camp will allow parents to celebrate their child's accomplishments for the week. Lunch and two snacks provided. Includes lunch and two snacks.

Simple Machine 1.0 - June 4 - 8 or June 11 - 15, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Emerging Technology Center
Age: Grades 4 - 5, Fourth grade prerequisite: WeDo 2.0
Cost: $235, each week

This camp will provide students with experiences that will enlighten them on the basics of machines by building, manipulating and testing LEGO models. Students will pair up to share a Simple Machine LEGO kit (over 300 pieces) and put LEGO motors to work on their constructions later in the week. This camp challenges young students while providing age-appropriate visual instructions. Students will learn foundational engineering principles in the motivating environment of LEGOs. LEGO lovers will create fishing reels, pulley systems, cars and scales while learning the physics behind simple machines. Includes lunch and two snacks.

Simple Machine 2.0
June 18 - 22, 8 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Age: Grades 5 - 6, Fifth grade prerequisite: Simple Machines 1.0
Cost: $235
This camp will continue to provide students with experiences in building, manipulating, and testing mechanical LEGO models. Students pairs will share a Simple Machine LEGO kit and utilize it to put together nine different mechanical builds. Students will continue to learn foundational engineering principles as well as the physics of simple machines by creating complex mechanical models including cars, clocks, and motorized devices. They will also be introduced to pneumatics. Includes lunch and two snacks.

EV3 Robotics 1.0 - June 25 - 29, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Age: Grades 6 - 7, Sixth grade prerequisite: Simple Machines 2.0
Cost: $235
Students will learn about and master the latest and most powerful robotics system created by LEGO, the EV3. Students will be introduced to the computer science through the guided user interface (GUI) programming environment. This will be crucial to students creating human-like behavior in the mobile robotic each pair of students will create. Students will systematically be introduced to the four sensors available for their robot and be challenged to apply their new knowledge each day. Show-and-tell will allow parents to celebrate their child's accomplishments at the end of the week. Students will also be introduced to computer-aided design as well as other computer science activities. Includes lunch and two snacks.

Creative Exploration Drama - June 11 - 15, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Student Center/Theatre
Age: Grades 6 - 12
Cost: $125
Learn to be a star actor in this five-day camp. Participants can explore their creative side while being taught the elements of play production and performance. Participants will help design and build the sets for two shows, explore their artistic side in art class and participate in the performances. Lunch and snacks provided. Plays will be performed Friday evening June 15.

No Boys Allowed Camp - June 18-22, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Allied Health Building
Age: Grades 7 - 12
Cost: $125
This camp is designed to give middle school and high school girls an opportunity to explore exciting engineering and scientific fields through demonstrations, classroom presentations, hands-on activities, field trips, and contacts with professionals in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. Lunch and snacks provided daily.

Basketball Camp - June 18 - 20, 8:30 a.m. - noon
Haws Gym Ages: Grades 2 - 5
Cost: $65
This is a fundamental basketball camp that teaches the basics of the game of basketball, both offensively and defensively. Different levels of instruction will be offered based on prior experience. This will be a fun interactive camp that will allow young athletes to train and learn from our collegiate athletes. WKCTC's Coach Mike Chumbler is the leader for these camps.

Basketball Camp - June 18 - 20, 1 - 4:30 p.m.
Haws Gym
Age: Grades 6 - 8
Cost: $65
This camp for sixth-eighth graders teaches the same fundamentals as the morning session for second-fifth graders including offensive and defensive basics and different levels of instruction based on experience. WKCTC's Coach Mike Chumbler is also the leader for these camps.
