ALBANY, NY (06/29/2011)(readMedia)-- Early bird registration is now open for the National Trust for Historic Preservation's annual conference, being held in Buffalo in October. Discounts are available to anyone who registers before July 31, and early registrants can also sign up for major conference sessions, field sessions, and special events.
The National Preservation Conference will take place October 19 - 22 in Buffalo, the first time it has been held in New York State since 1980.
"By bringing the National Preservation Conference to Buffalo, the National Trust will illustrate that historic preservation is an economic force to be reckoned with," said Jay DiLorenzo, President of the Preservation League of New York State. "Communities that treasure their historic resources reap tangible benefits through job creation, enhanced property values, heritage tourism growth and downtown revitalization. This is a great opportunity for preservation advocates, municipal officials, historic preservation commission members and others to network and share information about preservation strategies that really work."
A special session has been organized, titled Preservation 101 for New Yorkers, which will introduce attendees to state preservation officials, focus on state programs and provide information about local preservation activities.
According to Henry McCartney, director of Preservation Buffalo Niagara, the organization serving as the conference's local host, "There will never be a better time for New Yorkers interested in architecture to visit Buffalo and Western New York, whether as preservationists or as tourists. Excited Buffalonians are sprucing up, rolling out the red carpet and organizing exciting opportunities to see Buffalo and the region."
These On Your Own Activities run from Saturday October 15 through Sunday October 23 and are designed for both conference participants and the public. Planned activities include: a house tour in an endangered neighborhood; a bus tour highlighting locations from the novel City of Light followed by a talk with the author; a reception inside a grain elevator; rides on Buffalo's historic fireboat; frequent tours of the Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin Martin House, and much more.
