Rochester Psychiatrist Pleads Guilty To Tax Evasion Charge
ALBANY, NY (06/28/2010)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Jamie Woodward today announced that an East Rochester psychiatrist pled guilty to a misdemeanor count of failing to pay her New York State personal income taxes.
Virginia A. Wohltmann, 51, who resides at 1108 Roosevelt Road in East Rochester, pled guilty on June 23 before Acting Monroe County Court Judge Stephen T. Miller.
In December 2009 she was charged with felony counts for failing to file state personal income tax returns for tax years 2004-2008. In those years, she had treated patients at medical offices located at 490 Cross Keys Office Park, Fairport, and at Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital Mental Health Service Department in Dansville.
Judge Miller sentenced Dr. Wohltmann to 96 hours of community service as part of a conditional discharge. Prior to the plea, she had filed the delinquent returns and paid to the Tax Department over $100,000 in back taxes, penalty and interest.
Dr. Wohltmann's delinquencies were uncovered as part of a statewide enforcement initiative targeting individuals who evade their tax obligations by failing to file their state income tax returns.
Acting Commissioner Woodward said, "This case highlights our efforts to pursue tax delinquents who fail to file their income taxes. We will continue to work with local law enforcement to prosecute those who break the law."
The State offers programs such as the Voluntary Disclosure and Compliance Program to encourage delinquent taxpayers to become compliant without facing criminal prosecution or civil penalty. It is hoped that this case will encourage such taxpayers to come forward and satisfy their obligations. For more information about these programs, go to the Department's website at www.nystax.gov.
Acting Commissioner Woodward also thanked Monroe County District Attorney Michael C. Green for his aggressive prosecution of this case.
