Rockdale Magnet Sweeps awards at Georgia Southwestern math tournament

AMERICUS, GA (01/27/2012)(readMedia)-- High school students from all over Georgia squared off Friday, Jan. 20 at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) to put their math skills to the test.
The School of Computing and Mathematics at GSW held its 37th annual mathematics tournament. Sponsored by the AT&T Foundation, the competition is a qualifier for the state math tournament.
Teams from 33 high schools competed in the written and ciphering problem-solving portions. In all, 310 students competed in the event. Winners were recognized in four Georgia High School Association (GHSA) divisions and two Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) divisions.
In the individual portion of the competition, Rockdale Magnet School students Heeyoon Kim, Cameron Easley and Brian Silva won first, second and third place, respecitively. As a team, Rockdale Magnet won first place in the GHSA-AAAA division.
Other first place team winners included Landmark Christian School (GHSA-A), Pike County High School (GHSA-AA), Columbus High School (GHSA-AAA), Brandon Hall School (GISA-AA) and Tattnall Square Academy (GISA-AAA) .
Georgia Southwestern is hosting a junior math tournament for grades 3-8 Saturday, March 3. Over 600 students are expected to participate.
