BRISTOL, RI (04/28/2010)(readMedia)-- With a beautiful waterfront property and a nationally-ranked coed sailing team, Roger Williams University is pleased to offer youth sailing camps for the upcoming summer season for children ages 12-16. Starting in June, RWU will offer back-to-back, two-week training courses for beginner sailors followed by one intermediate course. No experience is necessary for beginner classes. All sailing camp sessions are held Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; lessons will be led by current RWU sailors and Amanda Callahan, RWU head coach and U.S. Sailing Team Silver Panda member.
All students will be taught to sail in 420s – small, two- to three- person, self-rescuing sailing dinghies. The curriculum of all courses will focus on safety, safe seamanship, proper rigging and de-rigging, knots, maneuvering with tacks and jibes, and how to deal with a capsized vessel. Campers gain confidence, teamwork and leadership skills, and knowledge of water safety, all while enjoying the outdoors.
It is recommended that students bring their own lunches, bottled water and snacks, as well as a change of clothes and towel.
The 2010 summer sessions are:
• Beginner Camp 1: June 28-July 9
• Beginner Camp 2: July 12-July 23
• Intermediate Camp 3: July 26-August 6
