Roovers Voted PSAC East Freshman of the Year, Joins Barcelo as All-PSAC East

Bieke Roovers had a breakout campaign in her first collegiate season for Kutztown women's tennis as she earned the 2023-24 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division Freshman of the Year award. She joined Gonzalo Barcelo of the men's side on the All-PSAC East Singles First Team, as voted on by the conference's head coaches and announced Friday, May 17.

Roovers gives the Golden Bears the program's first PSAC Freshman of the Year in 14 years after Ridhima Borooah last was recognized in 2010. It is also the first All-PSAC honor for the senior Barcelo, who gives the men's side their first First Teamer since 2017.

Roovers finished the year 8-8 overall in singles, primarily in the No. 2 position in the lineup. She was 4-3 in PSAC matches and also went 7-9 in doubles, combining the No. 1 and No. 2 slots in the lineup.

Barcelo had a career-best season for Kutztown. He finished 7-7 overall as the No. 1 spot in singles. Barcelo also recorded four victories in the No. 1 doubles tandem with Joaquin Perez.
