Rose Jackson, Robert Kesler and Kenisha Boone to Speak at Frostburg State University Commencement

FROSTBURG, MD (05/05/2011)(readMedia)-- Frostburg State University will celebrate and recognize the achievements of its May 2011 graduating class during the University's 138th commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 21, in the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center's Main Arena.

Dr. Jonathan Gibralter, FSU president, will confer degrees on graduates during two exercises throughout the day. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will start at 9 a.m. and the College of Business and the College of Education will present degrees beginning at 2 p.m.

Rose Jackson, College of Business; Robert Kesler, College of Education; and Kenisha Boone, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, are the featured speakers for the spring commencement exercises.

Jackson, of Oakland, Md., will graduate as a business administration major with a minor in management. She was the recipient of the MacVeigh and University scholarships. She has attained a 3.92 grade point average and has active leadership roles in the President's Leadership Circle, the College of Business Student Advisory Board and attended the Sloop Conference on Excellence in Leadership. In March she joined faculty and other President's Leadership Circle members as part of a leadership tour in China. She has served FSU students as a developmental math instructor and has also worked as a historical information specialist at the Ruth Enlow Library in Oakland, Md., and as an activities coordinator for a vacation real estate agent. Jackson is admired by her professors for her ability to consistently produce high-caliber academic work and maintain a professional demeanor characterized by poise, maturity and determination.

Kesler, of Westminster, Md., will graduate as an early childhood/elementary education major. Returning to FSU after taking five years off, Kesler has attained a 4.0 grade point average over the past three years. Excelling inside and outside the classroom, he is a member of the President's Leadership Circle and is the first recipient of the Dennis and Dawn Thomas Presidential Leadership Scholarship. He served as a volunteer and intern for the Head Start program. Kesler was also the Read to Succeed site facilitator and participated in Men Can Stop Rape at FSU. Kesler started as a camp counselor in 1999 for Sunshine Kids Club in Sykesville, Md., moved to director of the before- and after-care program and then to director of the kindergarten through ninth-grade summer camp. He was a part-time kindergarten teacher while living in Hawaii. For his internship in a third-grade classroom, he created an interactive and integrated website for the students.

Boone, of Clinton, Md., will graduate with majors in English and Spanish. She has maintained a 3.93 grade point average while excelling in community service and extracurricular activities. Boone was treasurer of the Latin American Student Organization, is the chair of the Black Student Alliance, a member of The President's Advisory Council on Diversity and the Sigma Tau Delta English and Phi Eta Sigma Freshmen honor societies, and a McNair Scholar. Boone studied abroad in summer 2010 in Madrid and Salamanca, Spain, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans. She has also worked consistently and diligently on numerous activities organized by the Women's Studies Program and as a tutor in FSU's Writing Center. Boone represented FSU superbly while working as an intern at the Washington Literacy Council. Her professional ambition is to establish and effectively operate a nonprofit organization specializing in aiding inner-city women, and she intends to pursue a doctoral degree.

Provost Dr. Stephen Simpson; Dr. Ken Witmer, dean of the College of Education; Dr. Ahmad Tootoonchi, dean of the College of Business; and Dr. Joseph Hoffman, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will present candidates for degrees during commencement.
