WHITTER, CA (02/25/2011)(readMedia)-- By compiling a team grade-point-average of 3.22, the Whittier College women's cross country team earned Division III All-Academic status from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Gilroy native junior Michele Callaway, a biology and psychology double major, received both team and individual All-Academic honors.
Callaway, reigning Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Individual Champion, crossed the finish line first for the Poets at Nationals and 14th overall out of the 279 runners who competed this year. She also received the following individual awards for the season: All-American, All West-Region, and All-SCIAC.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or better and have complied a score (finished at least five runners) at their respective NCAA regional championships.
The Poets finished the 2010 season in third place at both the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the West Regional Championships. Seven runners continued on to Nationals in Waverly, Iowa. Less than 5% of NCAA DIII Women's Cross Country runners advance all the way to the NCAA Championships.
