SPEAKER CHANGE: Flagler College history professor to give talk on 'Beyond Integration' Thursday

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (01/14/2014)(readMedia)-- Flagler College Associate Professor of History Michael Butler will give a talk titled, "Beyond Integration: The Black Freedom Struggle in Pensacola, Florida, 1960-1980," as part of the college's "Ideas and Images" program on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m.

The lecture will present Butler's research on the civil rights movement in Pensacola, and demonstrates that the struggle for racial equality in many locales did not end during the 1960s. His research on the Florida panhandle concludes that cultural issues continued to divide whites and blacks in the years after legal segregation ended, which had unforeseen political and economic consequences on the local population into the 21st century.

Butler has been working a book titled, "Beyond Integration: Race & Justice in Pensacola, Florida, 1950-2000." The manuscript, which he has been working on for eight years, discusses the intricacies of the civil rights movement and its effects on integration in Pensacola. In particular, Butler spends a large portion evaluating the activity of the area during the 1970s.

Butler is speaking in place of the previously scheduled Dr. Charles Reagan Wilson, Kelly Gene Cook Sr. Chair of History and Professor of Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi in Oxford

The lecture will take place in the Flagler Room of at Flagler College, 74 King St.

"Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists Program" features an international composition of artists and authors, introducing a fresh and creative component to the greater St. Augustine community.
