STEM and Health Careers Students Invited to Upcoming CSTEP Info Sessions

BATAVIA, NY (05/23/2017) (readMedia)-- While the recent end of the spring semester marked the close of another school year, it's never too early to begin planning for future academic success. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) as well as healthcare career students who are historically underrepresented or economically disadvantaged are invited to take advantage of Genesee Community College's recently adopted Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), which has prepared science, technology and licensed professionals in New York State since 1986. The first of four informational sessions is planned for this Thursday, May 25, 2017 from 2 – 3 p.m. in room T123 of the Conable Technology Building at the GCC Batavia campus.

"We're excited to be able to offer STEM students the opportunity to take part in this program through a New York State Department of Education grant-funded enrichment initiative," Jamie Schultz, CSTEP coordinator said. "The resources now available to students through the program will be a tremendous guide to them throughout the academic process and beyond GCC as they head off into their careers or transfer opportunities."

CSTEP provides students with resources such as financial support, peer and professional tutoring, academic and career workshops, educational field trips, assistance with securing job shadows, research opportunities and individualized advisement sessions. Students in the program may experience the summer bridge program, pilot research, participate in local internships and present at conferences (including the CSTEP statewide conference). CSTEP students tend to become strong leaders and highly competitive individuals either when transferring to a four-year college or university, or seeking employment.

Attendees of the upcoming informational session will learn more about the CSTEP program and the opportunity for financial support and academic enrichment as a GCC student. The other sessions planned are Wednesday, May 31, 2017 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., Wednesday, June 7, 2017 from 2 – 3 p.m., and Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., all in room T123 at GCC Batavia.

To attend any of the CSTEP informational sessions, RSVP by emailing program coordinator Jamie Schultz at jmschultz@genesee.edu or by calling (585) 343-0055 ext. 6456. If you are unable to attend but would still like to learn more, personal appointments can be made upon request.
