SUNY Canton Earns National Recognition for Military Friendliness
CANTON, NY (11/20/2015)(readMedia)-- SUNY Canton has recently garnered two prestigious awards recognizing the college's support of veteran students and their families.
Military Times has named SUNY Canton as one of the best technical colleges in the nation for veterans, and G.I. Jobs magazine has also selected the college for their 2016 list of military-friendly schools.
"It is an honor to be identified as a military-friendly institution and among the top technical colleges in the nation with this distinction," said Military and Veteran Student Service Coordinator Patrick S. Massaro. "At SUNY Canton we recognize and honor the sacrifices of current and former service members, veterans and their families."
Massaro advises military students and their families on navigating the programs that can assist them in reaching their educational goals. This year approximately 111 veterans, National Guard Members, reservists and veteran dependents are enrolled at SUNY Canton.
Emily A. Deon, an Individual Studies major from Potsdam and current Army reservist, said SUNY Canton's military-friendly community was a factor when choosing a college.
"My professors are very flexible when it comes to fulfilling my military obligations, particularly when it means missing a class to participate in reserve duty," she said. "Patrick was also very helpful in explaining the G.I. Bill and other military education programs."
Twenty colleges were selected for Military Times' 2016 "Best for Vets" list, which ranks schools based on factors such as academic and staff support, extracurricular activities, and student-to-faculty ratios, as well as statistics like veteran student retention and employment after graduation.
SUNY Canton was ranked 12th and was specifically praised for its participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program, a partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs which aims to provide tuition assistance for veterans.
G.I. Jobs Magazine
SUNY Canton has once again earned a military friendly school designation from G.I. Jobs magazine. The college was chosen for its support services, which includes a dedicated study lounge and flexible online learning options. This is the fifth time the college has been recognized by the publication.
"Post-secondary institutions earning the 2016 Military Friendly® School award have exceptionally strong programs for transitioning service members and spouses," said Daniel Nichols, chief product officer of Victory Media and Navy Reserve veteran. "Our Military Friendly® Schools are truly aligning their military programs and services with employers to help students translate military experience, skills and training into successful careers after graduation."
