SUNY Canton Faculty Member Places Second in National Competition

CANTON, NY (09/12/2016)(readMedia)-- A SUNY Canton faculty member found a new way to save his students money on classroom software.

Charles R. Fenner, Ph.D., who teaches in the School of Business and Liberal Arts, recently took second place in the "CapsimCore Professor Challenge," earning free business simulation software licenses worth $2,000.

Fenner competed against more than 240 college business professors from elite institutions across the country, including Duke University, Georgia Tech, the University of Florida and Pepperdine University.

The challenge was to field test CapsimCore, a new simulation software used to teach finance skills to students in entry-level business courses. According to the software's developer, the program allows users to experience what it's like to manage a business before taking advanced-level courses.

Over the course of two months, Fenner and the other professors were "CEOs" of manufacturing companies, making decisions about product lines, marketing tactics and production. He earned a total of 907 points out of a possible 1,000, garnering second place.

"The simulation will be offered free to students enrolled in my Introduction to Business course during the 2016-2017 online Winterterm session," Fenner said.

He added that another purpose of the field test was to demonstrate his willingness to complete any assignment he requires of his students.
