CANTON, NY (01/03/2013)(readMedia)-- Responding to the increase in mobile web traffic, SUNY Canton has developed a web site specifically for the modern smartphone user.

The new site makes it easier and faster for anyone with a web-capable cellphone to access information about academics, admissions, athletics, and directions to the College.

"We identified the top reasons users are visiting our website and used that data to create a slimmer, faster web experience for our viewers," said the College's Web Designer Travis G. Smith. "Our overall website displays well on hand-held devices, but our new mobile website is far more streamlined and easily viewed on a small screen."

During 2012, the College's website had more than 2.2 million hits. Mobile traffic accounted approximately 200,000 visits, or roughly 10 percent of overall traffic and usage was up approximately 6 percent from 2011.

Following trends and the overall availability and versatility of mobile devices, like Apple's iPhone or iPad and related Droid-operated devices, Smith decided to create the reorganized version of the web page.

"Our current webpage already looks great and functions well on most tablets. Our next step will be to develop a universal web site that provides the same experience on both traditional PCs and mobile devices," Smith said. "This is known as a 'responsive' design which will automatically adapt to whatever device someone may be using."

The College's website has gone through several major redesigns in the past 10 years, each one made it more efficient, attractive, and user friendly. A major advantage, past its overall ease of navigation, is its complete faculty and staff directory. The mobile site includes efficient rendition of the faculty and staff directory, making it easier for users to contact faculty and staff.

Users can still opt access the full page from their mobile devices. For more information, or to view the mobile site, visit www.canton.edu from a smartphone.
