SUNY Canton Jump Start Program Launches July 25

CANTON, NY (05/26/2016)(readMedia)-- More than 50 students will start college early this year at SUNY Canton.

The college will be holding its Jump Start residential program to help students as they transition from high school to college beginning July 25, approximately five weeks before the start of the Fall 2016 semester.

"Jump Start helps strengthen students' English, writing and math skills and has a special segment targeting financial literacy," said Molly A. Mott, dean of academic support services. "It is designed to create a sense of belonging and community for students through a highly structured routine of morning physical activities, group meals and even study sessions."

The program was funded through a $575,000 grant from SUNY's Investment and Performance Fund, which helps support the goal of boosting the number of degrees awarded annually statewide to 150,000 by 2020. Other than a $105 deposit, which will be applied toward the semester's fees, the program is offered free of charge to deserving students.

Students will begin the classes in one of the college's more than 40 applied learning programs after successfully completing the program.

"By the end of the five week program students will be better prepared for classes, in stronger physical condition, and will have a group of friends who can help support each other throughout college," said Melissa Evans, SUNY Canton's director of admissions.

For more information about the program, contact the college's Office of Admissions, by phone, (315) 386-7123 or email admissions@canton.edu.
