CANTON, NY (03/01/2016)(readMedia)-- A passionate and creative math instructor from SUNY Canton's Canino School of Engineering Technology will be receiving the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching for the 2015-16 academic year.

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher announced Frederick W. Saburro was one of the recipients of the annual award, which recognizes consistently superior teaching. Saburro will receive his ceremonial medallion and faculty recognition at SUNY Canton's 2016 Commencement Ceremony, held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, in the SUNY Canton Roos House Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center.

"Adjunct faculty are a critical component as SUNY seeks to ensure access, completion, and success for all students, and those honored with this year's award are the best of the best," Zimpher said. "Congratulations to all of the faculty receiving this award, which recognizes continued excellence in providing SUNY students with effective, motivational instruction that prepares them for success in college and career."

Saburro has taught mathematics for almost twelve years and he's also been tutoring in the Math and Science Lab for the last two years. Despite having already completed his Master of Science degree in secondary mathematics, he has participated in several classes at SUNY Canton to become a better teacher and tutor.

"Mr. Saburro is a dedicated teacher who spends nearly all of his time and energy teaching and tutoring," President Zvi Szafran said. "He is single-minded on the success of all students."

The adjunct instructor recently secured a SUNY Canton College Foundation Campus Enhancement Award to help fund peer tutors. He has also won two awards from students involved with Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society.

"Teaching is a collaboration between teachers, students, administration and staff, Saburro said. "That's what makes it so much fun and exciting."

According to Michael J. Newtown, interim dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology, Saburro has been a model adjunct instructor. "His passion for teaching allows students to see the exciting side of mathematics," he said.

Saburro is also the faculty liaison for the men's baseball team. He will be travelling with the players to Puerto Rico for the Clemente Cup Thursday, March 3.

Prior to teaching at SUNY Canton, Saburro taught middle and high school mathematics for the Schenectady City School District and taught college preparatory math in Jamaica.

He resides in Colton with his wife Hyacinth.
