The college jumped from 44 to 23 on the list of Regional Colleges North rankings and was ranked 13 in Top Public Schools. It is noted among its peer universities and is one of only six SUNY colleges in the category.

"It's tremendously gratifying to see the progress we make year-to-year in the U.S. News rankings, " said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. "We are a diverse campus with a focus on applied learning and technology. It's exciting to see more people become aware of our great academic programs and excellent learning environment."

New this year, the college was noted for its diverse student body. Approximately 28 percent of students at SUNY Canton identify as belonging to an ethnic minority group and 25 percent identify as an under-represented minority.

"Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths," noted Co-Chief Diversity Officer Lashawanda Ingram. "When you think about it, there is no better way for students to learn about different people than from others who share the same goals in higher education and in life."

The college is planning on opening a diversity center later this year under the supervision of its two newly appointed co-chief diversity officers. Ingram, and Professor William T. Jones are overseeing the initiative.

U.S. News rankings are established using data provided by SUNY Canton. Eligible schools are ranked on key measures including graduation and retention rates, assessment of excellence, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance, alumni giving, and other statistics.

"The U.S. News & World Report rankings are a testament to the excellent programs and services provided by faculty and staff across SUNY, and a reminder to our current and future students that SUNY is dedicated to providing them with a highly valuable degree that will serve them well long after graduation," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "Congratulations to SUNY Canton on this much-deserved recognition."

Some of the college's other new designations are available in the U.S. News' "College Compass" which includes subscription only content.
