CANTON, NY (01/29/2016)(readMedia)-- For the second consecutive year, SUNY Canton has been designated as a "STEM Jobs Approved College" by Victory Media, publishers of STEM Jobs magazine.

The organization also announced that SUNY Canton is a "Top 5 Industry Award" winner for geoscience.

Both honors recognize schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to students pursuing STEM programs and careers.

The 2016 STEM Jobs Approved Colleges list rates universities, colleges and trade schools on their ability and responsiveness to connecting programs and students with STEM occupations. Schools were scored on areas such as student opportunities, industry partnerships, career-driven coursework and engaging under-represented populations.

"With our STEM Jobs Approved awards, we're able to help educators evaluate whether they're meeting the needs of students by employing the kinds of programs that our research shows are most effective in getting students involved in STEM," said Glen Zollman, vice president of STEM Jobs. "We're pleased to showcase schools like SUNY Canton as an institution leading the way in this area."

SUNY Canton offers associate and bachelor's degrees in more than 30 STEM-related programs. Four-year programs include Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Nursing and Veterinary Technology. Two-year degrees include Engineering Science and Dental Hygiene.

The college was also selected for its efforts to expose elementary, middle and high school students to STEM fields through the annual Women in Engineering Day and Engineering Open House.

New this year, the Top 5 Industry Awards recognize the colleges and employers who contribute the most to STEM workforce development and diversity. Results from more than 1,000 entries nationwide placed SUNY Canton among the top five colleges that offer degree programs that prepare students for careers in geoscience.

SUNY Canton offers a bachelor's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology, where students can choose to study in areas such as geotechnology, water and wastewater testing and treatment, and environmental remediation. The college's state-of-the-art lab also allows students to master soil and water collection and testing procedures. Employment opportunities for civil and environmental engineering technicians are expected to expand due to increased awareness of environmental issues and more stringent regulations.
