SUNY Canton Professor Receives Chancellor's Award for Excellence

CANTON, NY (05/13/2014)(readMedia)-- A SUNY Canton associate professor has been recognized for her passion for research and commitment to student engagement.

Dr. Lawretta C. Ononye is the recipient of the 2014 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities and was honored for her achievements at the College's 106th Commencement ceremony May 10.

As the principal coordinator for the National Science Foundation Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Grant, her efforts have garnered funding that is used to award scholarships to a diverse group of talented, but financially disadvantaged, students.

She has coordinated events such as the STEM Summer Program and the annual Women in Engineering Day. Through these efforts, she has inspired more students to seek education and careers in science and technology.

"Dr. Ononye is a preeminent teacher at SUNY Canton, a role model for her students, and a pillar of the campus community," said SUNY Canton Acting President Joseph C. Hoffman. "Her peers, her superiors and her students hold Dr. Ononye in the highest regard."

Dr. Ononye developed and coordinates the Applied Physics minor and is in the process of developing a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Technology.

She has authored a book and several peer-reviewed journal articles. Her dissertation earned the 2008 Electronic Theses and Dissertation Award.

Dr. Ononye earned her Master of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Tennessee and her Doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Tennessee.
