CANTON, NY (06/12/2015)(readMedia)-- The magazine Learning By Design recently recognized SUNY Canton with a 2015 Outstanding Project award for its residence hall renovation project.
The college was commended for its adaptive reuse of its existing facilities. The roofs, walls and exterior doors of 4 dormitories were completely replaced, but the structures retained their overall design. The entryways were remodeled to match the nearby academic buildings.
The architectural team at C&S Engineers, Inc. chose multicolored synthetic slate shingles made by DaVinci Roofscapes to replace the residences' drab cement-tile roofs. The application was so successful that DaVinci featured SUNY Canton's residence halls on their website to showcase their product.
Built in 1968, the four residence halls accommodate approximately 850 students. Each building is approximately 600,000 square feet and separated into three wings that vary between three and four stories in height.
The college completed its newest residence hall, Grasse River Suites, in 2011. It was recently renamed Kennedy Hall, and offers students single occupancy rooms in an apartment-style setting. Combined, the buildings offer several options to best-fit students' housing needs.
In 2013, Learning By Design named SUNY Canton a recipient of an Honorable Mention award for its footbridges. The two timber-framed covered walkways serve as safe, short paths between campus and downtown Canton. Originally installed in the 1960s, the iconic bridges are specific to SUNY Canton and resemble the college's connection with the community.
Learning By Design recognizes the nation's most distinguished architectural organizations twice a year. The award-winning magazine showcases companies that exhibit innovation excellence and facilitate optimal learning environments.
