CANTON, NY (05/12/2014)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Canton student body has recognized SUNY Canton's grants coordinator for her contributions to the College and the community.

JoAnne M. Fassinger is the recipient of the 2014 Northstar Award, an honor that is given by the students annually to a faculty or staff member who makes the College a better place. Fassinger was among the honorees and award recipients that were recognized during SUNY Canton's Commencement May 10.

"I love being part of our campus community," Fassinger said. "Through my work, I am able to assist faculty and staff with securing funding for new and improved tools for student learning, to develop new programs and curriculum, and most importantly, to help students be successful with reaching their academic and personal goals."

As grants coordinator, she is responsible for matching faculty requirements with resources available from private foundations and government agencies. The grant funding she has acquired has enriched the educational experience for countless SUNY Canton students, as well as college-bound high school students in the North Country.

As the SUNY Canton Habitat for Humanity campus chapter adviser, she has led alternative spring break trips to construct and renovate homes for low-income families throughout the East Coast.

"Many students look up to Mrs. Fassinger as a role model," said Miss Melissa Cummins, Habitat for Humanity campus chapter president and Veterinary Technology major. "She is incredibly encouraging and brings out the best in all of us."

Fassinger is an active contributor to campus life through her volunteer work at orientation and leadership of recycling initiatives. Her dedication to SUNY Canton earned her the 2012 Excellence in College Service award.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Arizona.
