SUNY Canton Students Receive Chancellor's Awards for Excellence

CANTON, NY (04/15/2014)(readMedia)-- SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher presented the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence to three highly deserving SUNY Canton students.

"Students honored with the Chancellor's Award for Excellence truly embody the power of SUNY," Zimpher said. "As proven leaders and role models, scholar athletes, creative artists, and civic volunteers, each student is recognized not just for academic achievement, but also for the profound impact they have on college campuses and local communities across New York State."

Lydia C. Dale, a Graphic and Multimedia Design major from Norwood; Meghan P. Gibson, a Sports Management major from Canton; and Tiffany V. Moore, a Veterinary Science Technology major from Leonia, N.J., recently received their awards from the chancellor at a celebration of academic success in Albany. SUNY Canton Acting President Joseph C. Hoffman joined them for the ceremony.

"Lydia, Meghan and Tiffany truly represent the best of SUNY Canton," Hoffman said. "They are bright, motivated and they work incredibly hard. It was a distinct honor to join them as they were recognized by the Chancellor for their outstanding achievements."

Lydia C. Dale

Dale received the SUNY Canton Academic award for the highest grade-point average (GPA) in her discipline in 2011 and 2012. She also received the Canino Prize for Academic Excellence in 2012. She is the vice president of the College's branch of the American Institute of Graphic Arts and was a graphic design intern in the College's Public Relations Department. Dale has been a volunteer art teacher for the Christian Fellowship Academy and has worked on set designs for theatrical productions. Dale has also received several awards for her work in the College's juried art shows.

She is a published photographer and illustrator. A photo of hers was published in "An Online Journal of Arts & Letters" and she painted illustrations for the children's book "Ogs and the Oggie Joggie" by Joseph Weilder.

Meghan P. Gibson

Gibson also received academic awards for the highest GPA in her major in 2011 and made either the Presidents List or Dean's List for her high grades during the past three years. She worked as a student supervisor during the 2013 USCAA National Volleyball Championships and worked for the SUNY Canton Athletic Department. Gibson also was a summer camp counselor for the Oswegatchie Educational Center and was a summer soccer coach at Niagara University. She completed her senior internship with SUNY Cobleskill's Sports Information Department. She is a member of the SUNY Canton student Outdoor Adventure Club.

"Meghan has been a leader by example and has modeled the way for current and future Sports Management students at SUNY Canton students," said Diane J. Para, Ph.D., Sports Management program director and professor.

Tiffany V. Moore

Moore received an academic award for the highest GPA in her major in 2013. The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program named her an outstanding student. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and served as president of the Chi Alpha Epsilon honor society. Moore was the treasurer of the Black Student Union at SUNY Canton. She's earned either President's or Dean's List honors for her grades during each semester at the College. She is a student member of the National Association for Veterinary Technicians in America.

She is also a student assistant at the SUNY Canton Davis Health Center and has volunteered at the Potsdam Humane Society. She's been active in the Pool Enthusiasts Club and is a member of the Zen-Do Kai Martial Arts club.

About the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence

The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement. Recipients of the award are given a ceremonial medal to adorn their academic regalia at commencement.
