CANTON, NY (08/26/2013)(readMedia)-- SUNY Canton Acting President Joseph C. Hoffman and the College's administration, faculty and staff extend a welcome to some of the most academically prepared students in the College's history.

Classes officially begin today (Monday, Aug. 26), at SUNY Canton. An estimated 3,400 students are attending at the start of the Fall semester, meeting the overall institutional goals for the semester.

Approximately 850 first-time full-time freshmen are starting at the College this year and about 250 students transferred into the College's real-world academic programs.

"It's exciting to welcome these students to the SUNY Canton community," said Hoffman. "We're working hard to ensure that we have optimum enrollment, with well-prepared students and programs that prepare our graduates for successful careers."

Strategic enrollment management allows the College's administration to plan new growth and academic program development. It focuses on enrolling the right students in the right programs and will help bolster graduation and two- and four-year retention rates.

"We offer an affordable, accessible education that helps students transform their lives, helps employers find well-prepared employees, and strengthens the economy," said Director of Admissions Bruce L. Smith. "Over the next year, we will continue to attract first-time students, and we will increase our emphasis on recruiting transfer students and those studying engineering technology."

SUNY Canton has been increasingly raising the grade point average (GPA) of its incoming students. The average GPA of incoming students for Fall 2013 is estimated to be 82.5, compared to 80.6 in 2009.

The incremental increase in incoming students' grades allows the College to determine optimal enrollments for its size and the size of the community of Canton. It also assists the college in providing advanced career counseling and placement, as well as overall student development.
