SUNY Canton to Award Scholarships, Prizes at Engineering Open House

CANTON, NY (02/15/2016)(readMedia)-- SUNY Canton will award two $1,300 scholarships and other prizes during a community open house from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Canino School of Engineering Technology.

The event, sponsored by the Corning Inc. Foundation, is free and open to students of all ages and their parents. Activities will include a construction competition where teams of two will put their engineering skills to the test to build the sturdiest bridge. The first place team in the 9th to 12th grade category will each win a $1,300 scholarship. The second place team will receive waived tuition deposits, and the third place team will each win a $25 campus gift card.

Prizes for the 5th to 8th grade and kindergarten to 4th grade groups will include Lego Mindstorms and Technic kits, a Miposaur robot, and K'NEX construction sets.

There will also be more than 15 fun, hands-on demonstrations that will provide a unique glimpse into the college's engineering technology programs. Guests will be able to construct and program Lego robots, communicate with lasers, experiment with a 3-D projector and more.

"This event is designed to bridge SUNY Canton to the community by allowing everyone to experience the fun of being an engineer," explained Michael J. Newtown, interim dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology. "We encourage everyone to join us and explore the high-tech resources we have on campus."

Newtown added that students from the college's award-winning steel bridge team will showcase past and future designs. Since 1995 the team has garnered 15 regional titles and one national title.

The college is also sponsoring a dinner for high school technology teachers from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25. Activities will include tours, a guest lecture and demonstrations.

Both events are being held in conjunction with National Engineers Week Feb. 21-27, which is dedicated to increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers.
