CANTON, NY (11/15/2016)(readMedia)-- Betty J. Evans, a retired teacher, was recognized Monday for her recent contribution to the SUNY Canton College Foundation at a dedication ceremony.
The Tutoring Center in the Southworth Library Learning Commons was named in her honor, reflecting her lifelong support for learning.
"I'm proud to announce the Betty J. Evans Tutoring Center," said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. "This warm, friendly and supportive environment brings students together around learning. The peer and professional tutors do everything they can to help students excel in their courses. That's the same thing that Betty Evans did every day of her teaching career. She found ways to help students see their potential and succeed."
Szafran expressed his pride in the services offered and the staff who support the tutoring center, which consistently receives top marks in the SUNY-wide Student Opinion Survey.
Evans said that she had special memories of when her late son Perry attended SUNY Canton, and those recollections had lead her to offer her support. In addition to her recent gift, she endowed a scholarship in Perry's memory, which is awarded annually to a student from an agricultural background.
"I have spent most of my life helping people decide what they will do with the opportunities they have," she said. "My hopes are that the students will make good use of what is available here, and it is very apparent that they have already started. This is a beautiful and practical place."
Evans is well known as an ardent supporter of education, health care, her church and the community in the North Country. She taught students with disabilities for 18 years with the Canton Central School District. In 2014 she was inducted into the SUNY Canton Hall of Fame.
She said sponsoring the learning center was a good way for her to stay involved in young scholars' lives. "I hope this is an example for others of how they can invest in the future."
The SUNY Canton Tutoring Center is a hub of activity. It includes math, science, business and accounting tutors, and the college's writing center. Peer and professional tutors provide help for students in a resource-rich environment designed to promote learning.
