SUNY Delhi Accepting Proposals for 2016-17 Building and Remodeling Projects

DELHI, NY (02/08/2016)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi is inviting building proposals for a house or similar structure as a learning opportunity for students in the Carpentry and Building Trades, Electrical, Plumbing and Heating and Air Conditioning programs during the 2016-17 academic year.

The ideal project is a 1,500-2,000 square foot, residential home built with conventional framing. Priority will be given to projects that incorporate "green" building materials and alternative energy applications.

• Projects located within a 5-mile radius of the SUNY Delhi campus are preferred; however, applications within a 10-mile radius may also be considered.

• The design of the house, the development of the site, a foundation, and the supply of all construction materials is the responsibility of the owner. The students build the house under the direction of instructor James Worden.

• SUNY Delhi is also seeking smaller remodeling projects. Acceptable projects include garages and building additions, concrete and masonry work, interior remodeling, and solar panel installations.

Projects are selected for their educational value with ranked priority given to construction for non-profit organizations, employees of SUNY Delhi, individual homeowners, and commercial enterprises. In return for construction services, the non-profit organization or private owner contributes to the Carpentry program 20% of the cost of the installed materials. Commercial enterprises and/or business ventures contribute 30% of the cost of the installed materials. The final selection of the annual project is made by a committee that consists of the Carpentry and Building Trades faculty and the Dean of Applied Technologies.

For an information packet and application form, call SUNY Delhi's Carpentry and Building Trades Program at (607) 746-4084. Completed applications must be submitted by April 15, 2016. A project selection for September construction is anticipated to be made by May 1, 2016.
