SUNY Delhi Alumni Weekend Something for Everyone

Nursing 70th Anniversary, Art Exhibit and Casino Night among Highlights

DELHI, NY (05/22/2012)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Delhi Alumni Weekend, Friday, June 1 – Sunday, June 3 will feature activities for all ages of the college's alumni, including a Casino Night with over $1,000 in prizes, a Memorial Golf Tournament, a folk art exhibit, awards ceremonies to recognize outstanding Delhi alumni and the 70th Anniversary of the college's Nursing program.

Kappa Sigma Epsilon will host a Memorial Golf Tournament and pig roast, Friday, June 1 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at The College Golf Course at Delhi to benefit several college scholarship endowments, the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society and the SUNY Delhi Alumni Association. A silent auction will also be featured. All are welcome to participate. That evening, a welcome reception and awards ceremony will be held in the Farrell Student and Community Center with the SUNY Delhi Alumni Association bestowing its annual awards of Distinction and Merit.

Hank Adams of Highland Mills will receive the SUNY Delhi Alumni Association's highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award. This award honors those who have made a dedicated, continued and outstanding contribution to their profession, community and SUNY Delhi. Adams is Vice President of Peter Kiewit & Sons, a Park Ridge, N.J. company that provides construction services for government, transportation, power, water and other major sectors throughout North America. A 1977 Construction Technology graduate, he serves on SUNY Delhi's Construction Management Advisory Council and his generosity has made it possible for Delhi students to participate in the Associated Schools of Construction Design-Build regional competitions.

Chyrise Taylor of Narrowsburg will receive the Alumnus of Merit award, which recognizes a Delhi alumnus who is a rising star in his or her field. Taylor is a 2006 graduate of SUNY Delhi's associate's degree in nursing and a 2009 graduate of its online RN to BSN program. She is currently a doctoral student in nursing at the University of Massachusetts and a recipient of the Julie Bartlett Award, bestowed annually to an RN graduate who exhibits the highest standards in academics and patient care. Ms. Taylor serves on the External Advisory Council for the SUNY Delhi School of Nursing and was selected for Tele-Health, a service that uses technology to link geographically-challenged patients to health care professionals.

A full day of activities Saturday, June 2, will include a special presentation and luncheon in the Resnick Library to celebrate the 70th anniversary of SUNY Delhi's nursing program. Alumni, faculty, retired faculty and friends will gather at 11:30 a.m to look back at Delhi's nursing tradition. Guests may visit the Olive B. Price Special Collections Room for nursing and presentations will be made on Delhi's highly successful online RN to BSN program. Plans for the School of Nursing's new home in the soon-to-be renovated Sanford Hall will be revealed. A luncheon will follow at 12:30 p.m. in the Library Café.

Four of SUNY Delhi's stand-out athletes will be inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame at 3 p.m. June 2 in the Clark Field House. Inductees include Stephen Hutchinson '70 – basketball, Bonnie Busch-Finn '90 – softball, Jonathan Fagan '04 – Track and Field, and Vernon Gorgrant '05 – golf.

Saturday's festivities will culminate with Casino Night in the Farrell Center. Mentalist and entertainer Jim Karol, who has entertained millions in his appearances on national television, such as NBC's Phenomenon and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, will perform a floor show at 8 p.m. His performance will be followed by roving card tricks at the casino that will feature Blackjack, Craps and Texas Hold 'em. Over $1,000 in prizes, ranging from gas cards to unique get-away packages, will be available at the casino with guests playing for raffle tickets.

A series of folk art drawings by local artist Kenneth Stalter, a 1948 SUNY Delhi graduate, will be on display in the Farrell Student and Community Center throughout the weekend. Stalter will share his personal, and often humorous, reflections about the art that captured his youth in the 30's and 40's in a presentation on June 2 at 4:30 p.m. A Brooks BBQ dinner will follow at 5:30 p.m.

The SUNY Delhi Alumni Weekend will conclude on Sunday with a farewell breakfast buffet in MacDonald Hall dining center from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.
