SUNY Delhi Seeks Proposals for Annual Building Project and Remodeling Projects
DELHI, NY (04/08/2011)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi is seeking proposals for construction projects for students as part of their academic experience during the 2010-2011 academic year.
Proposals are sought for a house or similar structure as a building project, as well as for smaller remodeling projects. These projects serve as the laboratory for students in the Carpentry and Building Trades, Electrical, Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning programs. The ideal new construction project is a 1,500-2,000 square foot residential home built with conventional framing. Preference will be given to projects that incorporate "green" building materials and alternative energy applications.
Projects must be within a five mile radius of the SUNY Delhi campus. The design of the house, the development of the site, a foundation, and the supply of all construction materials is the responsibility of the owner. The students build the house under the direction of Instructor James Worden.
Remodeling projects will be completed by second-year remodeling, masonry and electrical students. Acceptable projects include garages and other small structures, building additions, concrete and masonry work, interior remodeling, and solar panel installation.
Projects are selected for their educational value with ranked priority given to construction for non-profit organizations, employees of SUNY Delhi, individual home owners, and commercial enterprises. Previous projects have included work at 4-H Camp Shankitunk, the Delhi American Legion, the Delaware County Historical Society and Habitat for Humanity. The final selection of the annual project is made by Carpentry and Building Trades program faculty. Preference is given to a complete house or small office structure project.
In return for construction services, the non-profit organization or home owner contributes 20 percent of the cost of the installed materials to the Carpentry program. Commercial enterprises contribute 30 percent of the cost of the installed materials.
For an information packet and application form, call SUNY Delhi's Applied Sciences and Technology Division at (607) 746-4084. Completed applications must be submitted by May 6, 2011. Project selection decisions for September construction are normally made by June 1.
