SUNY Delhi Student Luke Rogers Awarded USGA Internship

DELHI, NY (03/27/2014)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi student Luke Rogers of Grand Island, N.Y. was selected to serve as a 2014 United States Golf Association (USGA) Green Section intern.

Rogers is currently enrolled in SUNY Delhi's baccalaureate Golf and Sports Turf Management. Rogers is in his third year of the program.

Each year the USGA selects between fourteen and seventeen students nationally for its summer internship program, the USGA Green Section. Selected students travel with members of the Green Section agronomists to conduct more than 1,800 on-site visits to golf courses across the United States and deliver research results and practical information about construction and maintenance directly to subscribing clubs and courses.

The goal of the Green Section internship program is to provide participating students with a broader view of the golf course industry and help them learn about golf course maintenance through the perspective of the Green Section agronomists. Students receive a $250 stipend for the week, and all transportation, hotel, and meal expenses are paid by the USGA.

The Golf and Sports Turf Management program builds upon the long history of excellent associate programs at SUNY Delhi in Golf Course Operations, Turf Management, Hospitality Management, Business Management, and Recreation Management. It offers instruction for students interested in becoming golf course superintendents, athletic field managers and entering other support trades. Students complete a sequence of courses emphasizing horticultural practices, turf management, pest management, equipment management, irrigation management, budget planning and preparation, personnel management, and public policy. The major requires that an extensive 15-week internship be completed at an approved national or international internship site each summer between the spring and fall semesters. Additionally, students enrolled in the baccalaureate program complete a six- to nine-month internship in their final semester.

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree program in Golf and Sports Turf Management is designed to prepare future management personnel for the growing number of golf courses in the region and the nation. Graduates of the program qualify for assistant managerial positions at various golf courses, and after gaining sufficient experience, may become candidates for management positions in the golf course industry.

In addition, students may pursue a Business and Professional Golf Management baccalaureate degree. This program offers well-integrated curriculum that includes golf-specific courses such as golf club design and repair, rules of golf, tournament operations, three levels of teaching golf, and golf shop operations. The program also requires four different internships at approved national or international internship sites.
