DELHI, NY (09/05/2015)(readMedia)-- Kathleen Ogborn, Associate Professor of Veterinary Science Technology at SUNY Delhi, has been recognized by the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators (AVTE) with the Elsevier Award for Teaching Excellence, the organization's most prestigious award.

Ogborn has taught at SUNY Delhi since 1999, pursuing her passion for applied and interactive education in the field of veterinary science technology. She has risen to the position of associate professor as a leader in her department.

"Kathleen consistently goes above and beyond, whether it be in her teaching, classroom innovation, or department leadership and she is an excellent choice for this prestigious award!" says Dr. Bret Meckel, SUNY Delhi Department Chair/ Professor of Veterinary Science Technology.

Ogborn has developed and taught courses that range from clinical nutrition to clinical techniques to small animal care. In each of these courses, Ogborn has self-published lab manuals and workbooks to enhance student learning.

Ogborn's innovation in the classroom goes beyond published material. She takes novel approaches to course content, incorporating online resources that enhance the classroom experience. Students in Ogborn's classroom benefit from video recordings of her lectures and lab demonstrations, the use of a game-based learning site, and web-based, interactive content featuring practicing veterinary professionals handling real cases at an animal hospital. Many of these online tools allow students to review course material at their own pace.

Outside the classroom, Ogborn is a campus leader. She has co-chaired the Student Success Work Group, on which she continues to serve as a member. She has volunteered for a number of campus-wide committees, including the Promotion Committee, Institutional Accreditation Work Groups, and College Senate. Ogborn has taken on many task that are typically reserved for a department chair, such as program development, assessment efforts, and developing technical standards.

he AVTE's Award for Teaching Excellence has been established to honor veterinary technology educators who are recognized by their students and colleagues as being exceptional instructors. As recipient, Ogborn was honored at the annual general meeting of the AVTE Symposium in Niagara Falls, Canada.

Monica Tighe, AVTE past president, presented Ogborn her award, stating "She is very invested in her students' education and holds them to a higher standard, acting not only as a responsible educator, but as an advocate for our animals."

The AVTE promotes quality professional education of the veterinary technician student. In addition, the association is dedicated to facilitating lifelong learning and professional development by providing opportunities for the exchange of ideas to stimulate improvement in veterinary technician education.

Established in 1961, SUNY Delhi's Veterinary Science Technology Program was the first of its type in the United States. Since its inception, it has developed into a dynamic, nationally recognized program. Experiential instruction prepares graduates for a career in the biomedical and veterinary technology fields. Internship opportunities with national companies and organizations, such as Cornell University's veterinary school and ruminant center, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Upstate Veterinary Specialists, have helped distinguish SUNY Delhi Veterinary Science Technology as one of the nation's preeminent programs.

SUNY Delhi's Veterinary Science Technology (A.A.S.) program has been fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) since 1975.
