SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Music Presents Faculty Jazz Concert with Guest Mark van Gulden.
PLATTSBURGH, NY (03/10/2009)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Plattsburgh music department will present a jazz concert featuring members of the music faculty with guest artist Mark van Gulden on Tuesday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
The jazz concert features SUNY Plattsburgh faculty member and bassist, Ellen Powell, and her special guest, Vermont jazz artist van Gulden on vibraphone. Joining them will be Department of Music Chair Dr. Rick Davies on trombone and faculty members Herm Matlock on trumpet and Gabe Jarrett on drums. Together, the group will explore different forms of improvisational jazz, covering tunes that span decades of jazz history.
Guest van Gulden has been performing with Powell in and around the Burlington area for more than 20 years. Playing vibraphone most of his life, van Gulden studied with Bill Strorandt and Ted Wolf at the Berklee College of Music during his formative years. Currently, he is a freelance jazz artist playing the vibes, percussion, drums and keyboards with a variety of groups. Past associations include the jazz fusion band Finger Talk; punk dance band Pinhead; The Artichokes, Blues for Breakfast All Stars, the Ellen Powell Trio; Jennie Johnson and her Jazz Junketeers, Dick Forman trio; Chris Backridge's Jazz Quartet; the Mike Martello Trio; pit band credits for UVM and St. Michael's College; the UVM orchestra; and the Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra. Van Gulden lives in Monkton Vt., playing gigs and working as a software quality assurance technician. He also describes himself as a closet tenor and a baritone ukulele singer/songwriter in the group Clem the Breadman.
