Poetry reading by Gerry LaFemina, 8 p.m., Commons, Champlain Valley Hall, SUNY Plattsburgh. LeFemina is the author of several chapbooks, four full-length collections of poetry, a collection of prose poems and numerous published stories, essays and poems.

Tuesday, Sept. 23

Pendragon Theatre's "Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter" by Julie Marie Myatt, 7:30 p.m. Hartman Theatre, Myers Fine Arts Building on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Directed by Anita Montgomery. A winner of the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Theatre, "Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter" premiered in February at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Upon her return from an exhausting tour of duty in Iraq, a wounded Jenny ends up in Slab City, a California desert community of displaced misfits. Her search for what she has lost and what lies ahead is filled with humor, compassion and hope. This play contains strong language and mature themes. National Hazing Prevention Week Candlelight Vigil, 8:30 p.m. outside of Hood Hall on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Visual Artists Series: Eliza Garrison, art historian, 7:30 p.m. Cardinal Lounge, Angell College Center on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Garrison's areas of interest are the history of medieval art and architecture and the history of the northern Renaissance and 17th century art. An assistant professor at Middlebury College, Garrison's general research includes the history of portraiture and political representation, along with the historiography of Art History. Her talk is free and open to the public.

"Turning Away from Hate," 8 p.m. Warren Ballrooms, Angell College Center on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. After 15 years as a neo-Nazi white supremacist activist and recruiter, Tom "TJ" Leyden experienced a profound change of heart, turned away from hate and began teaching tolerance. Bilingual Poetry Reading from "Cage," 8 p.m., Krinovitz Recital Hall in Hawkins Hall on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Astrid Cabral, one of Brazil's most eminent contemporary poets, reads from a collection of Amazonian poetry. Some of Cabral's poems include "Ponto de Cruz," "Visgo da Terra," and "Ante-sala." SUNY Plattsburgh Professor of English Dr. Alexis Levitin translates. Levitin has translated 24 different volumes, including Wallace Stevens' "Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction," and Clarice Lispector's "Soulstorm." A slide show will be included.

Autism Spectrum Disorders: Introduction to the SCERTS Model, 8 - 4 p.m., Warren Ballrooms, Angell College Center on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Patty Did Denver (the Convention): a Commentary and Discussion, 5:30 to 7 p.m., Cardinal Lounge, Angell Center. SUNY Plattsburgh Librarian Patty Bentley, the only delegate from Clinton County to go to the Democratic National Convention, will speak about what it was like to be in the Pepsi Arena and at Invesco Field. Voter registration cards and laptops will be available so attendees of all political persuasions can sign up to vote. In addition, materials from both campaigns may be available for distribution. On display will be the various signs used during the convention. In addition, Bentley will share her blog (pattyatdnc.blogspot.com) and run a few short video clips as well as photos from the convention.

Visual Artist Series: Jean-Pierre Larocque, 7:30 p.m., Cardinal Lounge, Angell College Center on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. The French Canadian ceramic artist Larocque discusses his material works. Larocque has a degree in Intaglio printmaking from the University of Quebec and a BFA from Concordia University as well as an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Between 1989 and 1999 he taught at numerous universities throughout the United States. A Montreal resident, he has been a full-time artist since 1999. His work has been shown extensively and in 2006 he was commissioned for a solo show of drawings and clay sculptures for the inaugural exhibition of the newly rebuilt Gardiner Museum of Ceramics in Toronto.

Writer Valerie Hemingway, keynote address, 8 p.m., Cardinal Lounge Conference Room, Angell College Center on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Free and open to the public. As a young writer, Valerie Hemingway was sent to interview the 59-year-old Ernest Hemingway. He took her under his wing, eventually hiring her to work for him. She traveled with him and lived in his home in Cuba. At one point he discussed marrying her, but she said no and later went on to marry his youngest son, whom she met at Ernest's funeral. Valerie has now written about her experiences with the Hemingways in a memoir titled "Running with the Bulls." The book will be on sale and a book signing will take place. Visual Artist Series: Coral Lambert, 7:30 p.m., Alumni Conference Room, Angell College Center. Originally from Britain, Lambert, an award-winning sculptor, leader of the National Casting Center and professor at NYSCC Alfred University, will discuss her work. Over the past 18 years, Lambert has shown her work extensively in Europe and America. Lambert is internationally recognized for making large scale outdoor pieces and object-based gallery installations. She is a recent recipient of the Gottlieb Foundation Award.
