SUNY Plattsburgh Visual Artist Series Welcomes Brian Chu

PLATTSBURGH, NY (03/28/2009)(readMedia)-- SUNY Plattsburgh's Visual Artist Series will host painter, Brian Chu on April 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Hudson Hall Room 106 on the college campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Brian Chu is noted for his landscape and still-life oil paintings. He paints in thick layers of vibrant and rich colors. In landscapes and cityscapes, he shows an unusual vision for ordinary places.

"A kind of negotiation occurs in painting between what I see and what I decide to put on canvas. The visual sensation supplied by the external world - the light, colors, shapes, and textures of things -inundate my vision. The greatest bliss comes when a new way to see the world start to emerge in paint and color on my canvas, and I become a part in that process of forming," he said.

He has both BFA and MFA degrees from Queens College, City University of New York, and has had his works shown widely in New York City, California, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and throughout New England. Chu is an associate professor of painting and drawing at the University of New Hampshire.

The Visual Artist Series is a collaboratively organized and hosted event that brings seven to nine artists to the campus every year. These artists give public lectures, workshops, demos and critiques. The series is funded by the Student Association through the Campus Arts Council.

Drew Goerlitz, assistant professor of sculpture cited the importance of the Visual Artist Series by saying, "It's pretty important for students to see working artists; they can see how other people make their living."

"The series is a way for the students to market themselves and interact with the artists on a personal level, something they normally wouldn't be able to do if they just went to an exhibit," he said.

The series is another way that SUNY Plattsburgh makes the arts part of the fabric of the college and community.
