Dr. Bette S. Bergeron has been appointed as the new provost and vice president of academic affairs at SUNY Potsdam

POTSDAM, NY (12/14/2015)(readMedia)-- The State University of New York at Potsdam has appointed Dr. Bette S. Bergeron to serve as the College's next provost and vice president of academic affairs. Dr. Bergeron is currently the provost at Southern Connecticut State University.

She was selected for the position through a nationwide search, which began in April 2015, after former Provost Dr. Margaret E. Madden left to take a position as the provost at Siena College.

SUNY Potsdam President Kristin Esterberg commented, "Dr. Bergeron brings a wealth of expertise and experience that will inform and strengthen SUNY Potsdam's mission driven curriculum and leadership in innovative high-impact programing for students."

In making the announcement, Dr. Esterberg also wished to thank Dr. Judith Kirkpatrick for her service as interim provost, a role she has served in since July.

Incoming Provost Bergeron is scheduled to begin March 1, 2016. "It is a tremendous honor to be joining the SUNY Potsdam family. I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, students, and the North Country community in fostering the institution's continued commitment to access and academic excellence," she said after accepting the position.

"Dr. Bergeron's background in education as well as her creativity in looking at the future of higher education makes her a good fit for SUNY Potsdam's creative culture and commitment to student success through faculty excellence, supportive learning environments and hard work," said Dr. Alan Hersker, professor of anthropology and chair of the provost search committee. "We are thrilled that Dr. Bergeron will be joining us as we shape the College's third century."

About Dr. Bette S. Bergeron:

Dr. Bergeron is presently the provost and vice president of academic affairs at Southern Connecticut State University, where she has served since 2014. She previously was the dean of the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Before that, she held positions as the associate dean of East College, the director of the School of Educational Innovation and Teacher Preparation and professor of education at Arizona State University Polytechnic. Bergeron also previously served as a professor of education at Purdue University Calumet. She earned her bachelor's degree in education at the University of Maine, and went on to complete both her master's degree and her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction at Purdue University.
