Lacrosse, softball teams begin conference play this weekend

POTSDAM, N.Y. (03/28/2011)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Potsdam lacrosse teams continued their non-conference schedules with five games this week.

Men's Lacrosse

The men's lacrosse team was 0-2 last week. On Tuesday, the Bears lost a heartbreaker at home in overtime, falling 14-13 to Morrisville. Potsdam never trailed in regulation, but was unable to shake the Mustangs. Bears' sophomore Robbie Ashlaw (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) had a game-high seven points (1 goal, 6 assists), while senior Sean McAuliffe (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) and junior Ryan Paparella (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) each scored three goals. Sophomore Stephan Sloma (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) made seven saves in goal. On Saturday at Hamilton, Potsdam struggled offensively and was defeated 11-3. McAuliffe led the Bears with two goals and Ashlaw finished with a goal and an assist. Junior Mike Quinlan (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville South) and Sloma split time in goal. Quinlan registered seven saves, while Sloma tallied eight saves.

Women's Lacrosse

The women's lacrosse team posted a 1-2 record in three non-conference games. On Tuesday, St. Lawrence downed the Bears 17-7 in Canton. Junior Carly Richards (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) led Potsdam with two goals and an assist and junior Maribeth Simmons (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) and sophomore Lizzy Penree (Cooperstown, N.Y./Indian River) each contributed two goals. Junior goalie Kaci Milligan (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) made six saves in the first 39:14 and freshman Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) stopped three shots in the final 20:46. The Bears bounced back with an exciting 13-12 win over visiting Clarkson. Junior Sierra Langkammerer (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and senior Samantha Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) each scored four goals for the Bears. In goal, Milligan finished with 10 saves for the win. On Saturday, Potsdam hung with a speedy Rensselaer team before falling 13-10. Simmons scored three goals to lead the Bears while junior Whitney Boshart (Calcium, N.Y./Indian River) and Richards each contributed two goals and an assist. Milligan was solid in goal again, making eight saves.

Male and Female Performers of the Week

Sophomore lacrosse player Robbie Ashlaw is the Bears Male Performer of the Week. Ashlaw scored a goal and assisted on six others against Morrisville on Tuesday. He added a goal and an assist against Hamilton on Saturday. Ashlaw has eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points this season.

Lacrosse player Carly Richards is the Bears Female Performer of the Week for the second week in a row. Richards totaled nine points, scoring two goals and an assist in each of Potsdam's three games. The junior leads the Bears with 18 goals and eight assists for 26 points this season. With her three points against RPI, Richards tied former teammate Molly Lehman-Lewis '10 for second place on the school's all-time scoring list. Her 157 points place her just six behind Alisha Schaad '08, the program's all-time leading scorer.

Weekly Preview

The men's lacrosse team (3-4) travels to St. Lawrence on Tuesday, March 29, for a 4 p.m. meeting with the Saints. The Bears then return home to open their State University of New York Athletic Conference schedule at noon on Saturday, April 2, against Brockport.

The women's lacrosse team (3-4) hosts Morrisville on Wednesday, March 30, at 4 p.m. The Bears then wrap up their four-game home stand with their SUNYAC opener against Brockport at 3 p.m.

After a three-week break, the softball team (5-5) opens conference play with a home doubleheader against Plattsburgh on Friday, April 1, at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Bears head to Canton for two against St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
