POTSDAM, NY (03/15/2012)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Potsdam Department of Theatre and Dance will present the award-winning play "Marat/Sade" by Peter Weiss from March 28 to April 1.

The SUNY Potsdam production is directed by Don Mandigo, with scenic design by Todd Canedy, costume design by Alexis Foster and lighting design by Don Borsh. The music director is senior music education major Elizabeth Giffune Ekland of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The full title of the play, which is commonly shortened to "Marat/Sade," is "The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade."

"Marat/Sade" is set in the insane asylum at Charenton, France. The characters are the inmates in that asylum who also become the actors in the Marquis de Sade's play.

The play-within-a play takes place during the turmoil of the French Revolution, as seen through the eyes of de Sade. With music and mime, horror and laughter, the play portrays the story of Charlotte Corday, a fervent maiden compelled to assassinate Jean-Paul Marat, a leading revolutionary journalist in the French Revolution. "Marat/Sade" is not recommended for young children.

Performances will be held nightly from Wednesday, March 28 to Saturday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday, April 1 at 2 p.m. in the College Theatre in Satterlee Hall. The College Theatre is handicapped-accessible, but there will be no sign language interpreter available.

Tickets prices are $12 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens and SUNY Potsdam faculty and staff and $5 for SUNY Potsdam students with ID. All tickets are general admission, with no assigned seating.

Tickets may also be purchased at the box office, located in the lobby of Sara M. Snell Music Theater at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, or at Northern Music & Video in downtown Potsdam. Tickets will also be sold at the door, beginning one hour prior to each performance.
