San Francisco Native, Dannika Navales-Lugtu Eearns 1st Team All-SCIAC Honors

WHITTER, CA (06/07/2012)(readMedia)-- Whittier College Women's Basketball player, Dannika Navales-Lugtu concluded a very impressive season by gaining 1st Team Honors from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).
The freshman point guard who hails from San Francisco, Calif. is the first Poet freshman to make 1st Team All-SCIAC since the 2007-'08 season and she is also the lone freshman who made either 1st or 2nd Team All-SCIAC this year.
Navales-Lugtu finished her first year with the Poets playing in all 25 games starting 22 of them finishing with an 8.4 ppg average, which put her at No. 27 in SCIAC in scoring. She shot 36% from the field totaling 209 points on the season the third highest total on the team.
She dished out a team high of 90 assists finishing 2nd in SCIAC, while collecting 33 steals. She also finished No. 13 in SCIAC in 3-point percentage at 29% and finished 2nd in assist/turnover ratio at 3.6.
Throughout the season she hit the 17 point plateau three times coming on Jan. 21 against Claremont-M-S, Feb. 2 against Redlands, and then on Feb. 11 against Occidental.
She also had a game high 16 points on Jan. 12 against Caltech and followed that performance up with a 14 point performance against Occidental College on Jan. 14.
In addition. Dannika was named as Whittier College Freshman Athlete of the Year. There is no doubt she will have a very successful collegiate carreer with the Whittier College Poets.
