Sara Carranza Stars in Dominican University Production of the Wiz
RIVER FOREST, IL (10/18/2010)(readMedia)-- Sara Carranza, a resident of Chicago, IL, will appear as The Wiz in Dominican University's production of The Wiz, a contemporary account of the popular children's book. The production will be presented during the weekend of Friday, November 12 through Sunday, November 14 in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
The Wiz is a modern retelling of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of African American culture. The original 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was the first Broadway work to feature an all-Black cast. A film adaptation, featuring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor, was released in 1978.
With music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls and a script by William F. Brown, Dominican's production of The Wiz will feature a multicultural cast, hip-hop music, body drumming and tap styles of dance. The themes of The Wizard of Oz are still prominent in The Wiz: the importance of believing in yourself and the reminder that we all have courage, brains and a heart.
The Friday night performance begins at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday performances will be at 1:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday performance begins at 3:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $15. For more information or to order tickets, contact the Dominican University box office at (708) 488-5000 or purchase tickets online at www.dom.edu/pac.
