Sarrita Ricchiuto Receives 2014 Elisabeth Ruth Cramer/Truman A. Bender Herr Scholarship
MILLERSVILLE, PA (06/13/2014)(readMedia)-- Sarita E. Ricchiuto, York, Pa., has been selected to receive the 2014 Elisabeth Ruth Cramer/Truman A. Bender Herr Scholarship. Ricchiuto will graduate from Central York High School and will attend Millersville University of Pennsylvania this fall to study art education.
The Cramer Bender Herr award is issued to a first-time freshman art education major at Millersville University. The award was established by parents, Laura and Joseph E. Cramer in memory of their daughter, Beth Cramer, a 1971 Millersville University graduate with a degree in art education and funded in part through a generous estate gift of Ruth Bender Herr, and elementary education graduate from the MU Class of 1930. The award is generally in the amount of $700 per year and is renewable for each of the next three years if the recipient remains in good academic standing.
Ricchiuto pursued a solid college preparatory program which included honors and Advanced Placement classes. While in high school Ricchiuto was a member of the marching band, jazz band and the technical theatre department all four years. She also was an active participant in her church youth group throughout high school while remaining active in Girl Scouting, advancing to earn the highest award, the Gold Award. Ricchiuto designed a project for Leg Up Farm, which provided a zoo garden full of plants with animal names to help students with disabilities overcome their struggles through therapeutic exercises and lesson plans.
Ricchiuto was also a member of the school track and field teams and participated outside of school in club softball. She participated in Venture Crew 1861 playing Civil War field music in grades 11 and 12. She was selected as Junior Artist of the Year in 11th grade and spent time traveling abroad to Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France with Youth Music Abroad for two weeks.
