Elizabethtown College brings writers, educators to discuss history, the future and the changing world
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (02/27/2014)(readMedia)-- In a recent New York Times article, "Why Are There Still So Few Women in Science?" writer Eileen Pollack points out that physicists, chemists and biologists are likely to view a young male scientist more favorably than a woman with the same qualifications. At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, Selma Wunderlich, the first woman to participate in a two-year electrical communications management training program at the former Bell Telephone, discusses her experiences in finding personal and professional success as a science educator and engineer. The free program, "Glass Pipettes, Glass Ceilings: Women in the Sciences," takes place at Elizabethtown College's Bowers Writers House.
Also at Bowers this spring:
Author Dana Sachs discusses her perspectives on writing and publishing at 4 and 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 12. The 4 p.m. event is a craft talk; the 8 p.m. program is a reading. Sachs is author of two novels, "The Secret of the Nightingale Palace" and "If You Lived Here"; two works of nonfiction, "The Life We Were Given: Operation Babylift, International Adoption, and the Children of War in Vietnam" and "The House on Dream Street: Memoir of an American Woman in Vietnam;" and coauthor of "Two Cakes Fit For a King: Folktales from Vietnam." Her translations of Vietnamese fiction have been published widely.
Educator Robert Cousineau speaks about "Biking the Underground Railroad" at 8 p.m. Monday, March 31. Perhaps one of the most iconic routes in American history, the Underground Railroad represents freedom and oppression. In the summer of 2013, Cousineau completed the 1,500-mile bike ride along the Underground Railroad. He transformed the experience into a learning tool for students at Southern York County Middle School.
Author Paul Lisicky comes to Bowers Writers House Wednesday, April 9 to speak about his craft at 4 p.m. and read from his own work at 8 p.m. Lisicky is the author of "Lawnboy," "Famous Builder," "The Burning House," and "Unbuilt Projects." His new memoir, "The Narrow Door," is forthcoming from Graywolf Press in 2015. Lisicky teaches at Shooting for the Moon Spiritual Development Center, Snydersville, Pa.
Winding up the season is a visit from filmmakers Michele Poulos and Gregory Donovan, who plan to screen part of "A Late Style of Fire" the documentary of late poet Larry Levis at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 29. The documentary includes interviews with poetic luminaries and former Poet Laureate Philip Levine.
