CINCINNATI OH (05/01/2013)(readMedia)-- Scott Smith, LDA World Long Drive Record Holder, will hold a Driving Clinic on Monday, May 6 at the second annual Fairways for Airways Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Heritage Club in Mason.
Smith, whose competitive longest drive is 539 yards, will hold a demonstration with trick shots followed with a question-and-answer session before the start of the tournament. The American Lung Association and the Jovante Woods Foundation are again partnering for the second annual Fairways For Airways Celebrity Golf Classic in order to raise asthma awareness and fund asthma programming.
Scott Smith, a La Salle High School and University of Cincinnati graduate, got his start playing baseball and golf for La Salle. His curiosity for the sport of long drive hitting was sparked after several comments from spectators impressed with his golf long drives.
After getting his start by winning the amateur 2002 Pinnacle Distance Challenge against John Daley, Smith turned professional and went on to rank 5th in the world at the long drive. He has been a World Finalist from 2003 to 2007 and an exhibitioner for two years in Japan.
Prior to the 11:00 a.m. shotgun start, guests will have a chance to bid on the celebrity they wish to include in their foursome. Golfers will spend the day with celebrities such as Ickey Woods, Anthony Muñoz, Art Still, Jim Breech, Andrew Hawkins, Frank Minnifield, Taylor Mays and many more.
Competitions will be held including prizes for hole-in-one, closest to the pin and longest drive. Conclusion of the tournament will consist of a cocktail reception, dinner, auction and awards.
On August 14, 2010, Jovante Woods died suddenly from a severe asthma attack. Due to their loss, his parents, Chandra and Ickey Woods (former Cincinnati Bengals running back) were inspired to educate and assist others experiencing the loss of a loved one. With this, they founded the Jovante Woods Foundation. One part of the Foundation's three fold mission is asthma research and awareness, bringing asthma awareness to the community and providing asthma screenings and education to families in need.
It is because of the dedication of the Jovante Woods Foundation to asthma awareness that the American Lung Association has partnered in their efforts.
Lung diseases such as asthma, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cannot yet be cured but they can be managed. Making sure people know what is needed to take control of these lung diseases is one of the American Lung Association's top priorities. More than 35 million Americans are living with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, lung cancer and COPD.
