SCHENECTADY, NY (09/29/2015)(readMedia)-- Schenectady resident Sean O'Brien, the deputy Judge Advocate General for the New York National Guard, has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the New York Army National Guard.

O'Brien is responsible for providing day-to-day military legal advice for the commanders and staff of the 16,000 member New York National Guard.

He was recognized during a Sept. 25 promotion ceremony at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham.

O' Brien was commissioned as a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corp in 2003. He has served as a Legal Assistance Attorney, Administrative Law Attorney, and Deputy State Judge Advocate.

In his civilian legal career, O'Brien has served as an Assistant City Attorney for Schenectady, a Schenectady County Assistant District Attorney, and the Director of the Bureau of Adjudication for the New York State Department of Health, and as an Attorney in Private Practice.

In addition, he also served on the Schenectady City Council.

O'Brien served in the United States Air Force as an enlisted Airman from 1977 to 1981.

O'Brien is a graduate of the University at Albany where he received a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in History followed by a Masters of Arts Degree in History. He is also a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School where he received a Juris Doctorate.

He is a member of the New York and Wisconsin Bars.

His Military Education includes the Judge Advocate Basic and Advanced Officer Courses, the Labor Relations & Adverse Actions Course, the Contract Attorney's Certification Course, and the Command & General Staff Officer Course.

His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Reserve Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He and his wife Rhonda have a daughter Susan.
