Secretary of State, Governor's Office to Hold First Meeting with Census Grant Recipients

ALBANY, NY (01/21/2010)(readMedia)-- New York Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez and the office of Governor David A. Paterson will be holding a meeting of census grant recipients on Friday, January 22, in New York City.

At the meeting, grant recipients and their subgrantees will be updated on federal, state and local outreach strategies aimed at ensuring that every New Yorker is counted during this year's census.

Last month, Governor Paterson announced that 31 grants totaling $2 million were awarded to non-profit groups and local governments for community and media outreach. The grants are part of the 2009-10 State budget.

A total of 26 community groups and local government received state census grants. Many of them have subgrantees, bringing the total number of entities receiving awards to 81. The grants will fund public education, community outreach and other activities targeted at hard-to-count and low response rate populations for promoting awareness of the 2010 census, improving census questionnaire mail-back rates and encouraging cooperation with census takers.
