Senior Fishing Derby Attracts Able Anglers

STAUNTON, VA (05/12/2010)(readMedia)-- Lake Tams in Gypsy Hill Park will be the site of the 7th Annual Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 15th. The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department organizes this relaxing day for seniors free of charge. Registration for the event begins at 7:30am and the official horn sounds at 8am signaling senior anglers to drop their lines. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will stock the Lake with both Golden and Rainbow Trout. Many area businesses like the Stop In Food Store on Churchville Ave, Beverley Corner Store and the Staunton Eagles Lodge have made donations toward the event. Over $250 will be given away as door prizes. Besides door prizes, there will be prizes in the following categories; biggest fish by weight and length, biggest non-trout, most on a stringer, biggest golden trout and the fish that most resembles the event coordinator Frank Darcus.
The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department supplies coffee and light refreshments at the event. There are restrooms nearby. Seniors will need a fishing license to participate. The Staunton Recreation and Parks Department looks for opportunities to bring seniors together to socialization as well as opportunities to promote outdoor recreation.
