King joins Van Bramer's progressive coalition: RWDSU, Make the Road Action, NY Communities for Change, Teachout, Nixon, Ramos, Kim

QUEENS, NY (06/16/2021) (readMedia)-- Today civil rights activist Shaun King endorsed Jimmy Van Bramer for Queens Borough President. King joins a growing coalition of progressives backing Van Bramer, including Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU), Make the Road Action, New York Communities for Change, Zephyr Teachout, Cynthia Nixon, State Senator Jessica Ramos, and Assembly Member Ron Kim.

Van Bramer is the first candidate for Queens Borough President to reject real estate contributions, vote against last year's City Council budget for insufficient cuts to the NYPD, and oppose the borough based mega jails plan. Early voting began June 12th and the election is on June 22nd.

"Queens can't achieve justice by maintaining the status quo, and Jimmy Van Bramer has never been afraid of taking a stand for what is right. When he voted against the city jails plan it was because he knew that we can't keep building jails to fill without addressing the issues that lead to mass incarceration. He is brave and bold enough to take a stand against over policing to protect each and every Queens resident. Jimmy Van Bramer is the progressive Borough President Queens needs," said Shaun King.

Shaun King is a civil rights activist and member of the Black Lives Matter movement. He also contributes to The Intercept and previously for the New York Daily News.

Van Bramer is a life-long progressive activist who's been fighting machine politics for over two decades. Van Bramer rose to Deputy Leader of the New York City Council and is a founding member of the progressive caucus of the New York City Council. Before being elected to the City Council, he organized for LGBTQ rights, public financing of elections, and for the Queens Public Library.
