Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices

ALBANY, NY (03/21/2010)(readMedia)-- The Sheet Metal Workers' International Association Local Union # 83, will conduct a recruitment from March 22, 2010 through March 21, 2011 for four sheet metal worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications will be available at the Local Union # 83, 718 Third Street, Albany, NY on Monday of each week from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications can also be made on line at www.smwlocal83.org.

The Committee requires that applicants:

* Must be at least 18 years old.

* Must be a high school graduate or have a general equivalency diploma (GED) with a passing grade in algebra, math I or at least a 47 on the GED math test – a copy of high school transcript or GED must be presented at the interview.

* Must take the U.S. Department of Labor BOLT reading and arithmetic achievement test.

* Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by the signed affidavit.

* Must have a valid New York State Driver's License. Apprentices may be required to drive company vehicles.

* Must have a reliable means of transportation to and from work sites and apprentices school.

* Must be a resident of local's geographic jurisdiction for at least six months prior to applying – which include the following counties: Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington.

* Must submit to drug screening at the Committee's expense – if selected for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
