Belle Plaine native to serve in New York City

CONWAY, AR (05/24/2012)(readMedia)-- Shelby Howlett of Belle Plaine, Kan., a 2008 graduate of Belle Plaine High School, has been accepted into Teach for America. Howlett, who received degrees in sociology and international relations from  Hendrix College, will be serving in New York City.

"During my time at Hendrix I've become passionate about addressing the inequalities many Americans face, including the achievement gap in education," said Howlett. "I am excited to be a part of Teach For America next year so that I might be able to help close this gap and provide a good educational experience for children in New York City."

Howlett was one of eight Hendrix seniors selected.  She is the daughter of Mike and Sharla Howlett.

Since 1990, nearly 33,000 leaders have joined Teach For America. They have reached more than 3 million students across 43 urban and rural communities, founded dozens of high-performing schools, boldly led school districts and charter management organizations, and helped pass groundbreaking education legislation. In the 2011-12 school year, more than 9,000 corps members will teach 600,000 students while nearly 24,000 alumni will continue to deepen their impact as educational leaders and advocates.
